Always a Hole in One

I went miniature golfing tonight with my brother, his wife, and their four kids, ages 6, 4, 2 1/2, and 5 months. The setting was great - a pirate theme, complete with a lot of running water, a pirate ship, and skeletons. Now, if you have, or used to have, kids of those ages, you realize what an adventure that really was. If you have never gone mini golfing with that many kids who are that young, you are truly missing out.

I have never considered mini golf a sport until tonight. Between running after stray balls being hit every which way, running after kids who just couldn't wait to get to the next hole or to explore the miriad bodies of water throughout the course, and running to finish a hole and not keep other teams behind us waiting their turn, it was a race to the finish.

Just in case you were wondering, no, it is not possible to keep score in such a frenzied, haphazard game of golf. Half the time, a child was standing in the way of a shot or hitting your ball just when you thought you had a straight shot. You just have to let go of the adult notion of competition and keeping score and enjoy the experience.

My almost-three-year-old niece was quite the pro at this. Each time her ball made it into a hole, no matter how it made it into the hole (and she was quite creative), she raised her arms in the air and whooped. She had won each and every time.

One more lesson to me to enjoy the journey and celebrate the little things. They sure can be sweet.
